Aggregator Taps offer total access to full-duplex links with only one NIC or network port. Aggregation Taps are basically subdivided into two groups - Port Aggregation Taps and Link Aggregation Taps:
Port Aggregator Topology
  • Port Aggregation Taps are aggregating the RX- and TX traffic of one network link to one monitoring port. Therefore it is possible to analyze the Full Duplex network traffic on one single interface. After aggregating the TX - and RX traffic to one single port, the aggregated traffic is regenerated to a second monitoring port, providing the possibility to have a second monitoring tool to analyze the Full Duplex traffic with also just one NIC.

  • Link Aggregators allow the monitoring of multiple network segments with one or several monitoring appliances. These Taps are aggregating the traffic of up to 12 Full Duplex connections into one single interface After aggregation, the traffic is regenerated to up to 24 monitoring Ports . One big advantage of this solution is that the connected monitoring system only needs one NIC to monitor all 12 connections at the same time. Link Aggregation Taps are perfectly designed for the analysis of asymmetric network traffic and redundant routes with dynamic network protocols.

The need to monitor expanding volumes of 10 Gbps traffic is straining CAPEX budgets due to the high cost of 10G monitoring tools. The iLink Agg xStream helps you leverage your monitoring tool investments by:

The iLink Agg xStream is a link aggregator that combines traffic from as many as 20 network links or Span ports and sends it to four monitoring tools. Each of its 24 SFP+ ports accepts both 10G SFP+ and 1G-SFP transceivers, enabling 10G and 1G links, Span ports, and monitoring appliances to interconnect in any mix of speeds, including different fiber and copper media types. The iLink Agg xStream automatically performs all data-rate and media-type conversions, enabling 10G traffic to be sent to 1G appliances, and 1G traffic to 10G tools. This capability protects your security appliance investment, because the iLink Agg Xstream enables you to apply your existing arsenal of 1G monitoring tools to your new 10G traffic links. The Net Optics iLink Agg provides connectivity to network links, Span ports, and monitoring tools with dissimilar media interfaces; simply plug the appropriate SFP transceivers into the iLink Agg. Secure Access
The iLink Agg has no IP address on the network, so it is immune to viruses or other attacks. The addressable management port is totally isolated from the network data path, and can be connected to a dedicated management subnet for increased security.

The iLink Agg can be managed locally or remotely through a command line interface (CLI), Web UI and SNMP v3. TACACS+ and RADIUS perform authentication and authorization. RMON traffic statistics are available through the management interface as well as remote software updates.

Zero Dropped Packets
The iLink Agg scans incoming traffic from the network ports on a first-in-first-out basis. The scan rate is optimized to ensure that no packets are dropped, as long as the sum of data rates on the network ports does not exceed the monitoring port capacity of 1 Gbps.

Net Optics 10/100 to 10/100/1000 Dual Port Aggregator Taps provide ultra-efficient access to critical links. This pioneering technology enables any two devices to simultaneously monitor a full-duplex link - using only one NIC per device.

Typically, full-duplex monitoring with a network tap requires two NICs (or a dual channel NIC) one interface for each side of the tapped full-duplex connection. The Dual Port Aggregator Tap combines and regenerates these streams, sending all aggregated data out two separate passive monitoring ports. The best part of this innovation is the onboard memory to make sure traffic isn’t dropped during bursts.

Buffering Prevents Lost Data
The Dual Port Aggregator Tap is designed to handle the combined traffic of a single full-duplex link. Normally, the traffic should be below the receiving capacity of the NIC, that is, less than 10,100 or 1000 Mbps.

When the traffic queue exceeds the capacity of the NIC, the Tap buffers the overflow of up to 512 megabytes per side of the full-duplex connection. For your convenience, the buffers clear automatically when the traffic volume falls below the receiving capacity of the NIC. For example, if there is a traffic burst and a tap connected to a 100 Mbps network port on a monitoring device is now receiving 140 Mbps of traffic, the Tap buffers data until the burst is over. The Tap then sends the buffered data to the monitoring device until the buffer is cleared.

Simple to Deploy
Net Optic Dual Port Aggregator Tap is a simple plug-and-play solution addressing the fact that many monitoring systems, including most software based solutions, only offer a single channel NIC, limiting full-duplex visibility. While adding a second NIC can help maintain data integrity and visibility, there is a trade-off in flexibility and ease-of-use. An operating system and NICs that enable binding are often required to achieve the same functionality and the Dual Port Aggregator Tap. In contrast, the Dual Port Aggregator Tap requires no additional components or configuration on the monitoring devices.

Better than Span Ports
In the past, span ports were occasionally used to aggregate tapped traffic. However, in addition to other shortcomings of span port monitoring, span ports support very limited buffering and can simply drop data during bursts. The generous buffers of the Dual Port Aggregator Tap prevent data loss in these conditions.

Zero Delay™ - A Net Optics Breakthrough
Highly sensitive network locations can improve monitoring performance via the innovative features of Net Optics Taps. If power is lost to other 10/100 Taps, the connected devices may introduce delays as they detect the power loss and try to re-establish their link.

Net Optics’ pioneering design ensures that any loss of power to the Tap is transparent to the network, and does not affect the flow of traffic through the Tap eliminating packet delay and loss as potential security issues.

Security and Visibility
Without an IP address, monitoring devices are isolated from the network, dramatically reducing their exposure to attacks. However, the monitoring device connected to the Tap still sees all full-duplex traffic as if it were in-line, including Layer 1 and Layer 2 errors.

LINKprotect™
Many traditional taps prevent the operation of redundant routing and failover systems because they keep both sides of the network invisible to the other. The built-in LINKprotect feature eliminates this point of network failure by continuously monitoring both sides of the tapped network for link status. If one side of the tap loses link status, LINKprotect™ will close the other side of the link, so routers and switches can engage protocols to bypass the failed link.

LINKprotect will also keep monitoring both sides of the link until repaired, where it can then automatically re-establish the primary link. Timers (polling and recovery) and link reestablishment settings (manual or auto) are all user-configurable on both sides of the link and provide a level of convenience and flexibility not previously available in copper Gigabit taps.

Aggregation
Monitoring network traffic from two different sources is an important and frequent requirement in network analysis, commonly referred to as data “aggregation.” For example, in order to properly troubleshoot mostnetwork problems, network professionals need to receive traffic from both sides of a full duplex conversation.

LINKprotect™ will also keep monitoring both sides of the link until repaired where it can then automatically re-establish the primary link. Integrated fiber taps are completely passive devices and are not a point of failure on the network. Even if power is lost to the tap, the network traffic will not be affected. Zero Latency
