Phantom Monitoring Solution - Tapping, Filtering, and Forwarding
Security and performance monitoring tools require a complete view of traffic traversing virtual switches. This is typically a challenge as these tools do not have access above the internal virtual switch layer within the hypervisor. The Ixia Phantom vTap monitors all inter-VM traffic and captures only traffic of interest. This capability enables the customer to forward packets to any end-point tool of choice, whether physical or virtual; local or remote, to achieve full visibility and verification across their networks.
The Phantom solution does not require any services or agents to be installed on the virtual machine or application layer. This eliminates the need to sacrifice limited virtual resources such as vCPU, vRAM, and storage. The Phantom vTap is vSwitch agnostic, supporting the vSS, vDS, and third-party virtual switches.

The Ixia Phantom vTap can mirror all traffic within the virtual switch, apply smart TapFlow™ filtering, and send only traffic of interest to any monitoring tools of choice. Virtual traffic is bridged to the physical wire in a GRE- or VLAN-encapsulated tunnel that can be terminated by an Ixia NTO, Ixia xFilter™ or any other capable end-point termination tool of your choosing. The Phantom solution is an all-in-one solution providing unified, centralized management via a "single pane of glass." That means you gain total access and control of your security and performance monitoring needs with the product's easy-to-use web UI.

The Virtual Monitoring Challenge
Enterprises have been utilizing tap solutions for network traffic access for many years. Traffic capture, analysis, replay, and logging are now part of every well-managed network environment. In recent years, the significant shift to virtualization is yielding great efficiency benefits. However, today´s virtualization-based deployments create challenges for network security, compliance, and performance monitoring. This is because Inter-VM traffic is optimized to speed up connections and minimize network use on the physical core network switches. Such optimization can make traffic invisible to physical tools unable to extend easily into the virtual environments.
Costly new virtualization-specific tools plus training can affect the economic benefits and cost-savings of virtualizing. Currently, many tools suffer from limited throughput, hypervisor incompatibility, and excessive resource utilization. Next-generation data centers use virtualization technology to deploy private/public cloud environments on a single physical server or across a clustered group of servers, local and remote. Traditional taps cannot see the traffic between VMs that reside on the same hypervisor (east-west traffic), nor can they "follow" VMs as they are migrated from one host to another. Visibility is further reduced by the complexity of blade servers that have each blade running multiple VMs on a hypervisor.
Traffic running on blade servers shares a common backplane and creates a network blind spot, since the physical network and its attached tools are unable to see traffic above the virtual switch layer or the blade chassis network modules

Real-time, simultaneous passive monitoring of a single full-duplex link with two devices - using only one NIC per device.

Net Optics 10/100 to 10/100/1000 Dual Port Aggregator Taps provide ultra-efficient access to critical links. This pioneering technology enables any two devices to simultaneously monitor a full-duplex link - using only one NIC per device.

Typically, full-duplex monitoring with a network tap requires two NICs (or a dual channel NIC) one interface for each side of the tapped full-duplex connection. The Dual Port Aggregator Tap combines and regenerates these streams, sending all aggregated data out two separate passive monitoring ports. The best part of this innovation is the onboard memory to make sure traffic isn't dropped during bursts.

Buffering Prevents Lost Data
The Dual Port Aggregator Tap is designed to handle the combined traffic of a single full-duplex link. Normally, the traffic should be below the receiving capacity of the NIC, that is, less than 10,100 or 1000 Mbps.

When the traffic queue exceeds the capacity of the NIC, the Tap buffers the overflow of up to 512 megabytes per side of the full-duplex connection. For your convenience, the buffers clear automatically when the traffic volume falls below the receiving capacity of the NIC. For example, if there is a traffic burst and a tap connected to a 100 Mbps network port on a monitoring device is now receiving 140 Mbps of traffic, the Tap buffers data until the burst is over. The Tap then sends the buffered data to the monitoring device until the buffer is cleared.

Simple to Deploy
Net Optic Dual Port Aggregator Tap is a simple plug-and-play solution addressing the fact that many monitoring systems, including most software based solutions, only offer a single channel NIC, limiting full-duplex visibility. While adding a second NIC can help maintain data integrity and visibility, there is a trade-off in flexibility and ease-of-use. An operating system and NICs that enable binding are often required to achieve the same functionality and the Dual Port Aggregator Tap. In contrast, the Dual Port Aggregator Tap requires no additional components or configuration on the monitoring devices.

Better than Span Ports
In the past, span ports were occasionally used to aggregate tapped traffic. However, in addition to other shortcomings of span port monitoring, span ports support very limited buffering and can simply drop data during bursts. The generous buffers of the Dual Port Aggregator Tap prevent data loss in these conditions.

Zero Delay™ - A Net Optics Breakthrough
Highly sensitive network locations can improve monitoring performance via the innovative features of Net Optics Taps. If power is lost to other 10/100 Taps, the connected devices may introduce delays as they detect the power loss and try to re-establish their link.

Net Optics' pioneering design ensures that any loss of power to the Tap is transparent to the network, and does not affect the flow of traffic through the Tap eliminating packet delay and loss as potential security issues.

Security and Visibility
Without an IP address, monitoring devices are isolated from the network, dramatically reducing their exposure to attacks. However, the monitoring device connected to the Tap still sees all full-duplex traffic as if it were in-line, including Layer 1 and Layer 2 errors.

Simply Plug It In
Full-duplex monitoring to a single NIC is a snap with the Aggregator Tap. All network and monitoring cables necessary for plug-and-play deployment are included with the Tap. Everything you need, right out of the box.

Reliability
For extra uptime protection, Net Optics Taps offer redundant power connections. Should the primary power source fail, the Tap automatically switches to the backup power source. Power LEDs on the front of the Tap indicate the current power source even if power is lost and reapplied, there is always zero delay to network traffic.

Compact Network Packet Broker with Integrated Failsafe Taps for 1G and 10G Network Monitoring with Scale

The Ixia Director™ and Director Pro™ are compact versions of Network Packet Broker (NPB) with integrated failsafe taps for inline network access and direct traffic of interest to your monitoring tools. The Director Pro differs from Director mainly in two key functions, one in providing dynamic load balancing to tools and the other in supporting complex Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) filters.

Dynamic load balancing distributes the traffic load from 10G and aggregated 1G traffic evenly over multiple tools, while retaining flow integrity. DPI filters provide a powerful capability to look deep inside packets, using pattern matching ASCII or hex - based data within packet payloads. With Director or Director Pro, you can monitor as many as 26 SPAN ports or 13 in - line links with up to 11 monitoring tools depending on configuration. When the tool ports are configured in simplex mode, 10 additional SPAN ports can be connected.

In addition to the configuration flexibility, TapFlow™ filtering technology allows you to perform "smart filtering" and direct traffic of interest based on protocols, IP addresses, ports, VLANs. Zero Delay - A Net Optics Breakthrough
Placing the Gig Zero Delay Tap in highly sensitive network locations can improve monitoring performance via the innovative features of Net Optics Taps. If power is lost to other 10/100/1000 Taps, the connected devices can introduce delays as they detect the power loss and try to re-establish their link.

The Zero Delay engineering breakthrough ensures that any loss of power to the Tap is transparent to the network, and does not affect the flow of traffic through the Tap - eliminating packet delay and packet loss as potential security or performance issues.

Transparent Access
Gig Zero Delay Taps establish permanent passive access ports without introducing a point of failure or disturbing other network connections. The Taps either auto-negotiate communication or fixed speed and duplexing parameters as determined by DIP switch settings. These passive Taps deliver full-duplex monitoring with zero impact on network traffic around the clock.

Security and Visibility
Without an IP address, monitoring devices are isolated from the network, dramatically reducing their exposure to attacks. The monitoring device connected to the Tap sees all full-duplex traffic as if it were in-line, including Layer 1 and Layer 2 errors.

Simply Plug It In
Full-duplex monitoring is a snap when each side of the signal is sent to a separate NIC on the monitoring device. All network and monitoring cables necessary for plug-and-play deployment are included with the Tap.

Reliability
For extra uptime protection, Net Optics Gig Zero Delay Taps offer redundant power connections. Should the primary power source fail, the Tap automatically switches to the backup power source. Power LEDs on the front of the Tap indicate the current power source.

The Ixia xFilter™ provides advanced packet brokering, grooming, and optimization capabilities, including packet management, filtering, tunnel decapsulation, and network management. The Flex Tap is designed to fit up to 24 LC Taps or 12 MTP Taps in 1U. A unified rack mount and modular Tap design provide the capability to mix-and-match speeds, of 1/10/40/100G, and connectors, LC or MTP, within a single deployment for even greater flexibility.

High Density Modular Fiber Tap

The Ixia Flex Tap™ provide reliable continuous visibility of 100% of network traffic to support performance and security with no network performance degradation or disruption.

Flex Taps are flexible and scalable, each tap in the family is modular, can supports speeds up to 100G, and is 100 percent passive. Flex Taps are available in multimode and single mode fiber varieties with split ratios ranging from 50/50 up to 90/10. Depending on the model, the Flex Tap is available with either LC or MTP (MPO) connectors.

The design of the Flex Tap is optimized and tested for high-performance fiber networks ranging from 1G to 100G. Flex Taps are deployed at any inline connection on the network, therefore no additional overhead or management burden is added to the network devices to copy traffic for the monitoring/security infrastructure. The Flex Tap is compatible with all major manufacturers´ monitoring devices, including protocol analyzers, probes, and intrusion detection systems, and is protocol agnostic.

Aggregation, Filtering, and Load Balancing for 10GbE/40GbE Networks

The need to monitor and inspect all traffic on high-volume 10GbE and 40GbE networks pressures organizations to invest heavily in new 10/40GbE tools, or risk oversubscribing their current tools. The Ixia xStream™ 40 is a network packet broker (NPB) for high-speed networks, purpose-built for fail-safe inline security tool deployments and out-of-band network traffic monitoring.

The xStream 40 offers a comprehensive set of high availability (HA) features that are critical for fail-safe inline security tools deployment. Smart load-balancing enables deployment of multiple tools in parallel to increase the overall throughput, thus removing bottlenecks typically seen on a single security device. It also supports tools such as SSL decryptors, intrusion prevention systems (IPSs), firewalls, and web accelerators in serial for service-chaining. This enables banks, retailers, and government and health organizations to support many different enterprise network deployment scenarios.

The xStream 40 also features Ixia´s unique "Double Your Ports" feature (simplex connections), which provides industry-leading port density in a compact form factor. Moreover, each of the four 40GbE ports can be configured as four independent 10GbE ports, allowing a maximum of 64 10GbE ports. Furthermore, you can even combine four independent 10GbE ports into a single 40GbE, using the same MTP to LC fan-out cable, effectively yielding a maximum of 16 40GbE ports in the chassis.

Aggregation and Filtering
xStream 40 provides one-to-one, many-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many mappings of network links to monitor ports. Traffic from any set of network links and SPAN ports can be aggregated into a single stream and copied to any monitor port. xStream 40 is also a smart filtering appliance that directs traffic of interest to monitoring tools. Using the TapFlow™ filtering technology, each tool gets only the traffic it needs for its particular purpose, resulting in higher scalability and better security. The TapFlow hardware filtering engine processes traffic at full 40/10Gbps line speeds while filtering the traffic by protocol, IP address, TCP/UDP port, VLAN, and more.

Load Balancing Solution
The xStream 40 is a purpose-built appliance for distributing a traffic load to multiple tools. SFP+/QSFP+ ports and an integrated multi-speed flow distribution engine make xStream 40 ideal for distributing and load-balancing traffic from 10GbE and 40GbE links to multiple 1GbE and 10GbE tools.

It can also aggregate traffic from multiple 1GbE and 10GbE links and distribute it to 1GbE, 10GbE, or 40GbE tools. With the addition of a monitoring load balancer, these multiple 1GbE, 10GbE, or 40GbE tools can share the load to process increasing volumes of traffic more cost-effectively than investing in new 40GbE or 10GbE tools. Not only is the CAPEX lower, but major savings also accrue through avoiding the disruption and learning curve of integrating complex new tools into the environment.

High Availability
Highly reliable and foolproof HA feature supports Active-Active and Active-Standby modes with both Auto Sync and Manual Sync options to maintain configuration and state synchronization between the primary and secondary xStream 40 units. The HA link between the primary and secondary units can also be protected with a second link connected using a pair of spare ports. Load Balancing Group (LBG) supports spare ports with N:M tool redundancy where N active ports are protected by M warm standby tools. When tools are deployed in inline serial (service chaining), tools in the front can be safely bypassed when they fail so tools in rear can continue inspecting the traffic. Coupled with HA features in Ixia´s iBypass series, complex use cases can be implemented with extreme high availability.

Timestamping
xStream 40 supports timestamping of packets on the fly at line rate with nanosecond accuracy, supporting high-speed, low-latency trading environments. Using the PTPv2 (IEEE 1588) protocol, xStream 40 guarantees that the timestamping will remain accurate. The timestamp can be appended to packets on the fly with or without recalculation of the CRC.

Heartbeat Mode
The DURAstream™ 4000 1G Bypass Switch can monitor the health of in-line appliances by sending and receiving a heartbeat packet. A user programmable heartbeat packet can be injected into the monitoring port link to determine availability of attached monitoring devices or help determine delay due to high traffic volume.

Even if a connected in-line tool is powered on, the bypass switch can automatically switch traffic around it until the device returns to normal operation. At that time, traffic is re-routed back to the monitor port.

Passive Mode
In the event of power loss, the switch closes to create a physical connection, which in turn, creates a passive bypass path to help prevent traffic interruption.

Robust Management, Security and Logging
Manage your switch using built-in CLI or GUI, including secure web interface over HTTPS. Supports secure shell (SSH), SNMP, e-mail notifications, TACACS+ as well as Syslog to enable consolidation of log data from multiple systems into a central repository.

Load Balancing
Balance traffic across multiple ports to allow growth as the volume of data increases. Load balancing helps prevent loss of data by enabling deployment of redundant security tools that can back each other up, in the event of failure while their software updates. As link utilization increases, you need to be able to distribute traffic across more analysis tools. Load balancing allows you to extend the life of existing devices as your network traffic increases.

Data Filtering
Instead of tools attempting to keep up with aggregate traffic streams, the VERSAstream can apply packet filters to the data to increase tool efficiency and eliminate port oversubscription. Line-rate hardware filtering on each port allows you to customize and streamline the amount and type of data each connected monitoring tool receives. Because they are receiving only traffic of interest, tools run faster, data is more manageable, and issues are resolved quicker. Command line filtering uses Wireshark based syntax.

Aggregation (Many-to-Any)
Many-to-Any monitoring access aggregates network traffic and provides visibility for one or more monitoring tools. Aggregate and reassemble full duplex conversations from one or more trunked links. Perfect for tools that don't support multiple monitoring interfaces or for redundant networks, EtherChannel, load balanced servers, and asymmetrically routed traffic.

Regeneration (Any-to-Many)
Any-to-Many configurations replicate copies of identical network traffic to provide multiple tools with monitoring access to the same links. In addition to eliminating contention for scarce SPAN ports and test access points, multiple tools can be connected to the same link for redundancy, testing, or advanced monitoring applications.

Full Network Visibility for Monitoring Solutions

Aggregation
Monitoring network traffic from two different sources is an important and frequent requirement in network analysis, commonly referred to as data "aggregation". For example, in order to properly troubleshoot most network problems, network professionals need to receive traffic from both sides of a full duplex conversation.

Many network analysis or security tools are capable of monitoring traffic from many different points in the network at once. These tools however, only have a limited number of network interface cards and can only receive traffic from as many sources as they have ports.

Aggregation allows traffic to be combined from multiple sources including tap outputs, SPAN ports, or mirror ports. By combining the traffic originating from different sources into a single link, a single tool can be leveraged to provide security or analysis to a larger part of the network.

Regeneration
One-to-Many configurations replicate copies of identical network traffic to provide multiple tools monitoring access to the same links. In addition to eliminating contention for access to critical links, multiple tools can be connected to the same traffic streams for redundancy, testing, or advanced monitoring applications.

In addition to being able to replicate traffic to multiple tools, regeneration also provides the capability of sharing identical copies of traffic with multiple departments. This can eliminate SPAN port contention and allow each department access to a wider variety of data. With fully customizable regeneration, each department has the ability to access only the traffic flows that they need to see to do their job.

Port Steering (Any-to-Any)
Every port on the VERSAstream™ is capable of sending incoming traffic to any other port, and as a result, is capable of receiving traffic from any other port.

Since the port steering is left unrestricted, it is possible to set up the VERSAstream™ in a way that best compliments the data capturing architecture. These Any-to-Any ports can be dynamically configured through an easy to use command line interface (CLI).

Configurability
Using an easy to use command line interface (CLI), all port settings and management settings can be configured on the fly. As port speeds, network setup, and traffic requirements change the VERSAstream™ can with them.

Features like SNMP can be enabled and configured through the CLI for easier managment of the switch, While traffic related features like VLAN Tag Stripping can be enabled and configured through the CLI to customize it´s traffic flows.

Secure Access to Traffic
VERSAstream™ Data Access Switches are deployed out-of-band, and have no MAC or IP settings on the traffic ports. Because of this, the switch is invisible to the network and does not modify the traffic passing through it.

The SS-2212-10G is passivley inserted inline and can collect traffic from ten network links and direct two links full duplex traffic toward two outputs. Non-powered, built in fiber taps mean that traffic is safely collected with less that 10ns of latency added to the network. With 2 monitoring ports, you can have 2 copies of full duplex, line rate data streams. The SS-2212-10G is best used where a large number of 10G links need to be troubleshot quickly with one or two analytic devices.

10 Gigabit Access
The SS-2212-10G In-Line fiber network tap allows you to directa copy of traffic from any of the ten tapped network links and send the copy to one or both monitoring tools. Passive and non-intrusive visibility is available for two 10G monitoring tools.

Totally Passive and Power Fault Tolerant
Integrated fiber taps are completely passive devices and are not a point of failure on the network. Even if power is lost to the tap, the network traffic will not be affected. If one side of the link fails for any reason, the device on the other side of the link will recognize this outage immediately, so routers and switches can engage redundant protocols and failover systems.

Zero Latency
Fiber taps allow traffic to flow between network devices through an optical to optical interface, which resolves any latency concerns between network devices.

Graphic Display and Command Line Interface
The front panel graphic display allows users to determine where the copy of network link traffic is sent. Since the SINGLEstream™ can be interconnected, up to 8 deep, the address of each device, is available on the front panel. Power levels (in dB) on each link are available to determine if other network changes have occurred such as bad patch cords.

The CTP-1000 tap can be installed between any two network devices, such as firewalls, routers, or switches, and allow traffic to flow between these network points. The tap makes a copy of the data flowing through it, and provides the packet copy to network appliances or tools for application, security or recording purposes.

The CTP-1000 tap can be installed between any two network devices, such as firewalls, routers, or switches, and allow traffic to flow between these network points. The tap makes a copy of the data flowing through it, and provides the packet copy to network appliances or tools for application, security or recording purposes.

Aggregation Mode
The CTP-1000 can combine the two full duplex network streams of data together into a single monitoring output. Aggregation mode allows a tool with a single port to monitor full duplex communication on a network link. In Aggregation mode, the tap creates identical copies of the aggregate data on the network tapped network link. This mode allows 2 tools to see the same data. Primary and secondary tools are often used with Aggregation mode, since they both see the same network packets.

Non-Aggregation Mode
Non-aggregating mode allows the port to run at full line rate, without dropping traffic. This option is a popular choice when security or packet analyzers need to see every packet. Analyzers and probes connected to 1 Gigabit links can typically only receive a maximum of 1 Gigabit per port. In cases where you want to receive at line rates on a network link, use the CTP-1000 in non-aggregating mode, but remember you need to use 2 ports on your monitoring device to watch both sides of the network link.

Regeneration
In Aggregation mode, the tap generates 2 copies of identical network traffic to provide multiple tools monitoring access to the same link. In addition to eliminating contention for access to critical links, multiple tools can be connected to the same link for redundancy, testing, or advanced monitoring applications.

Reliable and Easy to Use
Unlike setting up operating systems and binding NICs, the CTP-1000 is simple to deploy, and every unit comes with dual redundant power supplies to ensure monitoring uptime. A convenient switch on the back of the device allows users to choose between Aggregation and Non-Aggregation modes. After setting the aggregation switch, the device is plug and play. There is no other configuration or setup necessary for this easy to use, reliable device.

Security
The CTP-1000 does not have MAC addresses so it is essentially invisible to the network. Use the CTP-1000 when you want to collect and capture packets for a security or storage application. The copy of traffic into the security or monitoring tool is one-way, so the CTP-1000 won't become a point of access for hackers, nor can anyone get to the security probe or recording device through the tap (since the traffic is one way).

savvius Insight - Network Performance Monitoring Appliance for smaller Networks

The Niagara 5002-8 is a network appliance that performs time-stamping, de-duplication, packet slicing, flow slicing, and flow-based load balancing. The load balancing is done with tunnel parsing based on the passenger packet. This system comes equipped with up to eight ports of 10G fiber with a management port. This system can handle up to 80Gbps of bidirectional traffic.
Packet slicing and flow slicing are features required and utilized by network monitoring, network forensics, network security and deep packet inspection (DPI) systems. Flexible packet slicing minimizes the amount of data required to be stored and processed on the networking tools while allowing the appliance to perform its functionality. Flow slicing provides better control of traffic and reduces the load for DPI tool when inspecting flows and protocols.
De-duplication eliminates multiple copies of packets, to reduce the amount of data that needs to be put into storage or transferred to monitoring devices within the network. Time-stamping is essential for network forensics and security applications. For performance monitoring, as more transactions occur on a network, time-stamping becomes necessary in order to be able to pinpoint where communication delays or latencies are happening, which allows for the network to be optimized. The Niagara 5002-8 is designed to run in conjunction with a broad range of applications, including security, performance monitoring, networking forensics, lawful intercept, storage and data center server appliances.
